Walking Tacos Recipe
Jamie here! Whether you're looking for an easy snacky meal for Game Day – or a casual kids' party food – this one won't disappoint!
My family loves to camp and I'm always looking for super easy meal ideas I can prep in advance for meals. This recipe for walking tacos is going to make our next camping trip a breeze! The best part is, every person can customize their walking taco just how they like it. (As a picky eater – I promise that is one of my favorite parts of ANY meal!)
How to Make Walking Tacos:
Ingredients needed:
- Ground Beef
- Rotel Tomatoes
- Store Bought or Homemade Taco Seasoning
- Onion
- Black Beans (optional – but can help stretch your beef!)
- Corn (optional – but can help stretch your beef!)
- Doritos or Fritos corn chips Bags (the singles are best)
- Shredded Cheese
- Shredded Lettuce
- Salsa
- Sour Cream
- Tomatoes
- Onion
- Avocado
- Black Olives
You'll want to start with a variety of single-serving bags of Doritos or Fritos for your walking tacos. The 1-oz bags are fine – but if you have bigger kids, you might want to pick up the 1 and 3/8 oz size (they're 2/$1 at most stores). I got Cool Ranch and Nacho flavor for fun, my teen says Cool Ranch WINS 😉
How to Make Taco Meat
There are loads of taco meat recipes out there – but this is my go-to easy taco meat recipe 🙂
- Brown 2 lbs of ground beef and 1/2 Onion on Medium heat until cooked through
- Drain any grease and return to stove on low
- Add in a can of Ro-Tel
- Stir in 4-6 Tbsp Homemade Taco Seasoning
Optional: Add a can of black beans and or corn (it makes it extra filling and stretches it even further!)
Once your meat is cooked throughout, open the bag of chips you're using and smash your chips a bit so they are bite sized. Fold the edges of the bag down into more of a bowl shape and then load in whatever meat and toppings you'd like – walking tacos DONE!
SO easy and perfect for picky eaters or a crowd of people – and who DOESN'T love a taco in a bag?!

Notes
Walking tacos are SUCH a great option for kids birthday parties, football games, sleepovers, backyard movie nights and of course – camping! It could even work for a Graduation Party taco buffet. You can definitely forego the single-serving bags and save a little money by just buying the bigger bag of Fritos or Doritos and by using paper bowls.
It's the same concept – plus it's cheaper and easier to eat this way. (But then they're not officially walking tacos – there's just something fun about eating out of the bag!)
How To Prep Walking Tacos for Camping
If you're planning to go camping, you can prep the taco meat ahead of time and store in a Ziploc bag in a cooler. I recommend bringing a disposable Hefty Foil pan to reheat the taco meat over a grill or fire circle. (The best cleanup is no cleanup!)
You'll want to fill your cooler with the toppings you plan on using – chopped tomato in a storage container, a bag of pre-shredded lettuce, and shredded cheese.
Grab any other bags of your favorite taco toppings – we usually bring along black olives, avocado, salsa and sour cream. (If you do avocado, you'll want to wait and slice it fresh).
